Missing My Beloved Coleus

Sunday, January 4, 2015

We have had too many gray days here lately...cold, cloudy, gray days.  Today is another cold day, but the sun is finally out. This makes me think- spring planting starts in less than 3 months!

It won't be long until I am pouring over Rosy Dawn Gardens website deciding on the coleus I can't live without in 2015.

If you know me, you know that I absolutely love coleus. I take cuttings every fall, but by mid-winter my cuttings are ready for my compost pit.  The past two years I have ordered my coleus from a Michigan company -  www.rosydawngardens.com

They have the best selection for breathtaking coleus - ones you will never see anywhere else.  Their prices are reasonable, you tell them when you want them shipped  (after April 15th for zone 6b) and they come packaged to withstand a F2 tornado!

When you order, keep in mind of the color combinations, leaf design and height.  I have found that it's best to plant several of the same exact kind together. That makes for a wave of color.  Coleus do great in pots.  There are coleus for sun and shade.  Here in Tulsa I find that coleus do best in semi-shade (more sun than shade.)  They need sun to truly show off their beautiful colors.

I have so many more things to tell you about selecting, growing and propagating coleus.  I'll save that for another day.

Don't wait too long to order your coleus.  They run out of the good ones quickly - isn't that always the case in everything?
